This roundtable takes a deeper look at nattokinase, an enzyme derived from the traditional Japanese food natto, which has seen a marked rise in use post-COVID. It is believed to promote healthy blood flow by breaking down fibrin, a protein involved in clot formation, and may help reduce blood pressure or improve circulation. It has become a popular over-the-counter supplement for heart and cardiovascular health and for concerns related to the “spike protein”; however, very little is known by those who are taking this supplement with little or no medical guidance.

Nattokinase is not without risks. Its potent fibrinolytic activity can interfere with blood-clotting mechanisms, posing dangers for individuals on anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications—or those with underlying bleeding disorders. Taking nattokinase in isolation without proper nutritional support (and without understanding its interactions with other drugs or nutraceuticals) ignores the complex biochemical networks that regulate inflammation, oxidative stress, and vascular repair. A truly effective and safe approach requires considering the individual’s full physiological picture—diet, genetics, medications, and lifestyle—within a holistic, clinician-guided framework rather than relying on a single enzymatic intervention.
